The Royal Scotsman Train
royal_scotsman_train royal_scotsman_train The Royal Scotsman had its official launch in 1985 in May. The train's owners put an assortment of different carriages together to make this train. The leases on the carriages last for a period of 5 years and the train was so well run that it won the prestigious Queen's Award for Export. But its current line up was completed in May of 1990. When the leases were up,  it was decided that different carriages would be bought, the owner had very definite design requirements. Ten Pullman carriages were purchased, and designed by Jame Park. Special woodworking was placed inside. Many improvements were initiated in these carriages. Electric heating was installed to replace the steam heating and every cabin contained private facilities. There was seating capacity added in the dining and observation cars, it went up to 32. Then in 1997 more seating was added to bring the capacity up to 36, and there were now 4 single state cabins, and 16 twin type state cabins.

Taking a Trip on the Royal Scotsman

Taking a trip on the Royal Scotsman will bring guests to the centre of the Scottish Highlands as they sample fresh, local produce and other fine delicacies. Guests are regaled with stories of Scottish history by a clansman who makes these events come alive, while enjoying the lush scenery of the Scottish countryside including mist-shrouded mountains dotted with ancient castles.

Kyle of Lochalsh is another point of interest to guests on a Royal Scotsman trip. Here, guests can watch as fresh oysters are harvested near the train's platform. Guests dine on these fresh oysters as the train continues on.

When it comes to dining, the fare aboard the Royal Scotsman is simply superb. The menu includes fresh, local food that provides seasonal delights. The food served on the train is some of the best in all of Britain. The Royal Scotsman also features an incredible selection of wines so that guests can always find the perfect complement to a meal. Breakfast options include a continental breakfast, or a traditional full-cooked Scottish meal.

The menu includes such delicacies as shellfish, salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef, and game along with produce of the season. The meals are planned by chefs, that have been trained by well-known chefs such as Michel Roux, Raymond Blanc, and Charlie Trotter. Guest needing special diets are also well catered for.

One of the cars is designed to accommodate larger parties with tables seating from 6 to 8 people, while the other car has intimate and elegant place settings for parties of 2 to 4 people. Some nights are designated as formal affairs, with the attire of the evening including tuxedos or even kilts, and other nights are casual coat-and-tie affairs.

The sleeping accommodations are wonderfully extravagant and comfortable, with 4 single state cabins and 16 twin cabins. The cabins provide a wonderful way for guests to relax and escape from the commotion, as well as watch the beautiful scenery of the Scottish countryside. The observation car is also specially designed for guests to lounge and take in the sights of the Scottish landscape.
